Dilip Kumar, real name Yousuf Khan, born in 1922 in Peshawar in a large Pathan family. His father was a fruit merchant who later moved to Maharashtra and set up a business in Bombay.

His first movie was Jawar Bhata produced in 1944. He became the most successful as hero from the very beginning of his film career with release of his movies Jawar Bahat 1944, Jugnu 1947, Mela 1948 and Andaaz 1949.
The repeated tragic type of roles he played in the movies during 1950s, where that earned him the image of Tragedy King, it also affected his health. He consulted a psychiatrist in London who advised him to play a variant light types of roles rather than playing the continued tragic type that were adopting to his psycology. Breaking the image, he later did Ganga Jamuna and Ram aur Shyam that broke all box office records.
On the romantic side he was linked to many a actress in his personal life. In early period it was Kamini Kausal, then Madhubala and then Vijayanti Mala. However, he married the beauty queen Saira Banu in 1966 at the age of 44.

After a break in 1970s, Dilip Kumar made a come back in 1981 in the charecter roles, yet again delivered hit movies i.e., Karanti, Shakti, Vidhata, Karma and Saudagar.
Dilip Kumar was nominated and took the charge as the Sheriff of Bombay in 1980.
